Fall Family Photos: What to Wear for Your Session

Life with kids is beautifully unpredictable — sometimes a little chaotic, often full of surprises, but always rich with meaning. And honestly? That’s what makes family photos so special. The real magic isn’t in the perfectly posed smiles, but in the little in-between moments: the giggles, the way your toddler grabs your hand, or the way everyone melts into a hug.

But one thing that does help those authentic memories shine? Your outfits. What you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel — not just in the colors, but in the textures, layers, and how comfortable you feel wearing them.

The Basics

In my experience as a family photographer, neutrals, muted tones, and earthy shades always photograph beautifully against fall’s backdrop. These palettes bring warmth, depth, and harmony without distracting from your family’s personalities.

A few tips:

  • Stick with neutrals, muted shades, and earthy tones (rust, sage, cream, deep blues, soft browns).
  • Add texture with fabrics like linen, knits, denim, or lace to create visual interest and natural movement.
  • Avoid neon colors, busy prints, logos, and athletic wear — they can pull focus away from your story.

Coordinating as a Family

The goal is to complement, not match. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, think about weaving a palette together. For example: mom in a soft cream dress, dad in an earthy olive shirt, and kids in shades of rust or denim.

Layers and textures are your best friend here — they add depth, bring variety, and look especially lovely when captured in motion.

Outfit Inspiration for Fall Photos

  • For Women: flowy dresses, layered knits, long skirts with cozy sweaters
  • For Men: henleys, button-ups layered under sweaters, textured pants
  • For Kids: simple dresses, suspenders, cozy cardigans, or tights with boots

Some of my favorite places to shop include: Free People, Altar’d State, Target, Old Navy, H&M, Neuflora, Golden Juniper, and Bits & Pieces. Don’t forget — thrifting or Etsy finds can also bring unique, timeless touches to your family’s look.
