Six Tips for a Successful Cake Smash

Six Tips for a Successful Cake Smash

Every time I go to edit a cake smash session, my daughter sits next me and asks for cake. I mean, if I were her, I would too. Cake fixes most things, but the best time to eat cake is on birthdays.

One of my favorite kinds of sessions is a cake smash. Rather than elaborate indoor set ups, I prefer shooting them outside on blanket with baby and a cake. Keeping the set up simple allows your baby to shine! Here are some tips for a successful outdoor cake smash photo session:

  • Baby might not like the cake. If you're comfortable with it, introducing a little cake before the actual session can make things go smoother! Looking back on my own daughter's first birthday cake smash, it took her a good 30 minutes to trust that she was allowed to be messy and eat her cake. Most of her pictures are just giving confused looks to me and the cake.
  • Remember to dress baby in clothing that is washable -- especially if your cake's icing has a rich color in it.
  • Neutral colors make for great contrast. Matching with the cake can definitely be done, but wearing a neutral color will help things pop in post! Borrowing from my client closet is always an option if you need help finding something for your baby to wear.
  • Avoid red icing. Your baby will look like they just murdered someone.
  • Don't be afraid to smear cake on your baby. I mean it! Sometimes it just takes a while for babies to get into their cake. Get in there and smear it all over them.
  • Most importantly, relax, don't rush, and have fun! Babies will do what babies will do. Let them use this time to explore different tastes and textures. The ultimate sensory experience.
